S. Hugentobler, B. Oettli, D. Ruckstuhl Personality Poker A playful tool for team, group and individual growth The complete test consists of the manual, an evaluation pad, a set of playing cards, a box
Playing Personality Poker stimulates individual and team growth. During the game, participants are encouraged to reflect on themselves and others and come to see how others experience the impact of their behavior and personality style. Roles are often clarified and hidden qualities come to the fore. At the heart of the game is a set of 230 cards, each featuring a different personality adjective. The individual words are primarily positive, but some people might perceive or interpret certain words as negative due to their own life experience, professional situation, or stage of development. What one person sees as a strength, another may see as a weakness. It is the mutual exchange of interpretations, and not the scientifically correct definitions, that lies at the core of Personality Poker. Personality Poker is most successful when: participants have a positive attitude and are open to growth, there is a climate of curiosity, enjoyment of discussion and mutual respect, and a facilitator has familiarized her- or himself with the content and purpose and can ensure that the process remains focused on the interests of the group. As people show different behaviours depending on context or their different functions, feedback may differ according to the group playing. Participants should usually be prepared to devote 2-3 hours of undisturbed time Personality Poker can be used by managers, presenters, trainers, adult educators, consultants, and human resource professionals. Personality Poker emerged from practical work with target groups by experienced facilitators over many years. The adjectives and the number of them selected were not derived from scientific theory but arrived at through practical experience.
How Personality Poker Works As the name suggests, Personality Poker is designed around a card game. It can be used as part of an official team-building event, or just picked up and used when the feeling takes you. The main feature of Personality Poker is that you can utilize it and adapt it for whatever situation you want. It is best run with groups of between 2 and 10 players.
The Game Each player then chooses (or is dealt) 10 "Attribute" cards. The players then sort these cards out themselves, looking at which 9 cards are most applicable to themselves and their own personality. The 10th card (the one least applicable) they pass to anyone else in the group who they feel that card applies to. They place that card on that person's "More of this", "Less of this", or "Maintain" card. It should be mentioned that at this point there should be no discussion about why they were given this card. This happens later! Each participant then takes another card from the pile (taking them back up to 10) and the process is repeated. "Play" continues around the group for as long as desired (either a time limit or the number of cards dealt).
