Joint call for special issues paper proposals: Military Psychology in Europe in European Psychologist and European Journal of Psychology Open

At the 18th European Congress of Psychology 2023 in Brighton, an invited symposium on “European Psychology in The Wake of the War in Ukraine – Initiatives and Impact” attracted the attention of many European and international colleagues. During this symposium, a question came up whether there is something like a military psychology in Europe and nobody really had a final answer. Therefore, the primary goal of this special issue is to give a comprehensive answer to this question by providing a broad overview on research and applied activities with regard to the broad field of military psychology in Europe which has perhaps led a kind of shadowy existence as yet. Facing the now over three-year long war in Ukraine (and the war in Middle East) the time has more than come to inform the psychological community and the public on the contributions of psychology in preventing and alleviating the terrible suffering caused during war times in soldiers, their families and the civil public.

The range of tasks and topics covered by military psychology is broad: From a historical perspective, the role of military psychology is closely linked to the development of the global political situation. While in peacetime the focus is primarily on the prevention of deployment-related mental disorders and the maintenance of the health of deployed personnel and their training, in times of crisis the focus is often on aftercare and treatment, but there is also a link to operational psychology. 

Against this background, we are calling for review articles on the development, current challenges and application of military and operational psychology in Europe. In doing so, we aim at informing and stimulating theory, research and practice and to bring together different perspectives in the area of military psychology. We invite you to primarily submit overview articles which may include interdisciplinary perspectives. Empirical articles are welcome as well if a core topic of military psychology is exemplarily addressed and highlighted.
