Submitting a book proposal
Hogrefe welcomes book proposals in the fields of fields of psychology, psychiatry, mental health, and medicine. Please take note of the informtion below before submitting a book proposal.
In general, we prefer initially to receive a proposal about your authored or edited work, rather than a complete manuscript. Please note that we cannot guarantee to return proposals submitted by regular mail. We do promise, however, to make every effort to respond to your proposal within 4 weeks.
A good proposal should clearly explain the book’s objectives and, perhaps most importantly, the benefits and advantages it provides to readers. It should be brief (a few pages), and cover the points listed below. Please remember that it is worth your while to prepare the proposal carefully, as it is your first step as an author/editor in convincing reviewers and readers of the qualities of your book and your writing.
Proposal Questionnaire
If you have a book manuscript you believe might be a good fit for Hogrefe, please complete the Proposal Questionnare and return it to us along with your CV/Resumeat your convenience.
Please provide contact information for all authors/editors that will appear on the cover of the proposed book.
- If the manuscript is an edited volume, please attach to your submission email a separate document of the preliminary list of contributors.
- Please provide the proposed manuscript delivery date.
- Please provide the scope and overview of the work. Take 2–4 paragraphs to place the project in context.
- Does this project utilize the subject of or provide insight into the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and/or mental health?
- What is the primary audience for the manuscript? Who is the work targeted at? Please be as specific as possible.
- Please identify both related and competitive books in the market, including, if possible, names of authors and editors, titles, years of publication, prices and publishers. (This helps us accurately position your book in the market.)
- What are the unique selling points for your book? Please provide 5–7 reasons why this book is likely to appeal to and be purchased by the core audience. What distinguishes this book, for example, from the current literature?
- Would your proposed manuscript be suitable for use in a university classroom or seminar? If so, in what field or subfield?
- Is this manuscript an unrevised version of your dissertation?
- If revised, what is the nature of the revision? Please also provide the names of individuals who have commented on your dissertation.
- Has your manuscript been published or distributed (in whole or in part), or is it currently being published or distributed?
- If yes, please explain the material’s provenance and copyright holder.
- Is your manuscript presently being considered for publication by other publishers? Please note: your proposal can only be considered on the understanding that Hogrefe has first option on the publication.
- What is the expected word and/or page count of the manuscript?
- How many of the following will be included: tables, line drawings, maps, and/or images?
- What among the following will be included with the manuscript?
