Open access for UK authors publishing in APA’s PsycArticles – including Hogrefe journals

Hogrefe is participating in the open access publishing pilot for the APA’s PsycArticles database in 2024.

The American Psychological Association (APA) has entered into an open access agreement with the UK’s Jisc, also known as a “Read and Publish” agreement. This means that authors affiliated with UK institutions participating in APA’s Jisc agreement have the option to publish open access in all hybrid journals in the APA’s PsycArticles database, including the 15 hybrid journals published by Hogrefe, at no cost.

Basic requirements

  • The article’s corresponding author is affiliated with a UK institution participating in APA’s Jisc agreement.
  • The article manuscript is accepted on or after August 1, 2023.
  • The article is an original peer-reviewed research article – often called “original article”. The term is used here as a collective term for all those articles for which Hogrefe collects APCs, but which may also be referred to using other terms in individual journals (such as review article, multistudy report, research trends).

All articles under this agreement can be published under a CC-BY license. Upon publication, articles will be made immediately open access.

How to submit article for consideration

If you are a “corresponding author” from a participating Jisc member institution (see the list above), simply submit the article to one of the Hogrefe journals; once the manuscript is accepted for publication, you can publish the article open access under the APA-Jisc agreement.

“Corresponding author" means the person who submits the manuscript to the journal, is responsible for correspondence regarding the article, and is listed as such within the article. The designation of “corresponding author” is independent of the order in which contributing authors are listed.

We do not permit multiple corresponding authors. When the corresponding author has multiple affiliations, the institution of the author’s primary (first-named) affiliation is determining.

You will be made aware of this agreement during the submission and review process in the Editorial Manager submission portal, which will link to the terms of the agreement and a sample publication release. The agreement comes into effect on August 1, 2023. Original articles received by the publisher as an accepted manuscript on or after that date will be checked by your contact person at the publisher. After acceptance, you will be sent a publication release form tailored to the agreement and can inform us under which CC-BY copyright license you would like to publish the article.

Please note that certain research funders (e.g. cOAlition S, Wellcome Trust, UKRI, NIHR) require articles acknowledging their funding to be published under the CC BY 4.0 licence. If unsure, you can check funder requirements in Sherpa. Most institutions also prefer the use of the CC BY licence; please check with your librarian if unsure.

In the release form, you will be asked to indicate your institutional affiliation. This institution must subsequently confirm your affiliation. When indicating your institutional affiliation, please make sure that you name the institution at which you are working at the time of acceptance of the article (even if you have subsequently moved). If you are researching and working at more than one institution, the first-named (“primary affiliation”) applies.

Upon submission, the corresponding author must provide funder information (Funder Name and Grant No./ID) and also Ringgold affiliation ID where possible. Funder notes are integrated in the XML and displayed in the HTML version as well as in the PDF version of an article.

PubMed Central (PMC) and Europe PMC

Hogrefe will deposit qualifying Version of Record articles (published articles) funded by Wellcome Trust, UKRI, and NIHR to PMC, which gets mirrored on Europe PMC.

Is there a limit on open access articles published as part of this agreement?

Yes. APA and Jisc have set a limit on the maximum number of open access articles that can be published each year under this partnership. The article cap is set at the consortium level and includes both APA and Hogrefe titles. It will run on a first come, first served basis. Should the cap be exceeded, participating institutions have the following two options:

  • Gold open access publication of the version of record (VoR) with 30% discount off the list price APC for both APA and Hogrefe published hybrid journals
  • Green open access publication of the author accepted manuscript (AAM) – details here: Guidelines on sharing and use of articles in Hogrefe scientific journals | Hogrefe
  • Authors whose institution and/or funder requires it can share the accepted manuscript (AAM) under the CC BY licence.

What are the other benefits of this cooperation?

Hogrefe is participating in the APA-Jisc agreement to support open access publishing by UK authors. This is another milestone on our way to open access.

With this in mind, Hogrefe grants authors of participating institutions (or their funders) a 25% discount on regular APCs (article publication charges) for the three full open access journals we publish, as papers in them are not covered by the APA-Jisc agreement. These journals are:

These open access journals are indexed in major indices and databases, including the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), to heighten visibility, speed of dissemination, and impact.
