Overview of article publication charges (APCs) for open access publication
Please refer to the overview document for detailed information on our APCs.
Hogrefe has various institutional agreements, society membership arrangements, and waiver and discount programs for corresponding authors who have little to no access to APC funding, such as researchers from low- or middle-income countries, early career researchers, and for members of various societies.
Information on editorial independence
Editorial decisions on the acceptance of a manuscript are made by the independent editors of the respective journal. Editors are not involved in correspondence regarding payment of article publication charges (APCs) or in checking in advance the authors’ ability to pay. Even “Editor Choice” articles are chosen independently.
Your article will be handled in the same way by Hogrefe and by the editors of the journal in which it is to be published – regardless of whether it is published open access as part of the Hogrefe OpenMind program, in an open access journal, or in the traditional publication model (funded by subscriptions).

Agreements with institutions
Hogrefe has transformative agreements with institutions (e.g., universities or libraries), also known as Read-and-Publish agreements. The institution pays us an annual license fee. This fee covers both online access to the journals (reading rights) and the publication costs (Article Processing Charges, APCs). If corresponding authors affiliated with such an institution submit an article to a hybrid journal of our publishing house and it is accepted, the article can be published Open Access without additional costs charged by Hogrefe. The APCs are already covered by the paid license fees.
Current agreements can be viewed in the ESAC Transformative Agreement Registry:
