Qualifications for test users

The assessments and training courses listed on this website are intended for use by properly qualified professionals. Sales of test materials are restricted to those with the necessary training, education and experience as outlined by relevant professional bodies such as the British Psychological Society.

Qualification Guidance for Clinical / Educational Assessments

Hogrefe uses levels 1, 2 and 3 to describe the amount of training and/or experience necessary to purchase assessments and other materials. You will find these qualification levels on the product and training course pages of this website; please use them as a guide and contact us should you need further clarification.

Level 1
All books and most test manuals sold by Hogrefe are set at level 1. No special qualifications are needed in order to purchase these materials.

Level 2
The majority of the clinical and educational assessment materials sold by Hogrefe are set at level 2. In order to purchase these materials, you are required to provide qualification details when registering or ordering. There is no one perfect combination of training and experience, but in order to be qualified at level 2 you must have:

  • certified training and experience in a relevant discipline (e.g. clinical psychology, counselling psychology or speech and language therapy);
  • membership of a professional organisation appropriate to the focus of the test; and/or
  • evidence of competence in the use of psychological tests.

If you are listed on registers such as those of the Health and Care Professions Council, the General Medical Council, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, or the Nursing and Midwifery Council, please include these details when registering. If you work in education assessment, details of any psychometrics training undertaken are required.

You may also be asked to fill out our qualification declaration form for more details.

Level 3

This level requires:

  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as a Practitioner Psychologist and/or is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society. Individuals must also have the protected titles of Clinical Psychologist, Forensic Psychologist, Counselling Psychologist or Educational Psychologist.
  • For access to ADOS-2, ADI-R, the Rorschach, or Griffiths III, users will be asked to provide the relevant training certificate or will be checked against a database of qualified users.

Any customer qualified at level 3 is automatically qualified at levels 1 and 2.

Qualification Guidance for Occupational / HR Assessments

Hogrefe upholds standards set by the British Psychological Society. Details are laid out on each product page, or you can call us for guidance. Our customer service staff and psychologists are always happy to discuss your background and experience and if needed, suggest options for training and purchasing.

How do I know if I am eligible?
In the United Kingdom, if you hold a Test User Occupational: Ability (TUOA) or Test User Occupational: Personality qualification (TUOP) you will be able to purchase our occupational assessments, except NEO, which requires an additional extension. A master’s degree in psychology that includes training in personality assessments and/or psychometrics could also be acceptable. In the rest of the world, additional local requirements may apply and there could be restrictions depending on your location.

I am eligible - how do I get access?
You can call our customer service. If you meet the educational criteria set out above, you will be asked to provide evidence. You will be required to purchase the assessment manual so that you understand the psychometric properties: concepts, construction, scale meanings, normative basis, and how the test can be applied appropriately and professionally.
