FAQs: Course suitability and course content
Hogrefe is happy to assist any individual wishing to attend one of our courses. Please contact us if you have any queries or concerns about course suitability. Please also consider the general guidance below.
ADOS-2 and / or ADI-R training is suitable...
- if you are a healthcare professional with a professional qualification that includes a diagnostic remit, such as (in the UK) a practitioner psychologist, paediatrician, child or adult psychiatrist or forensic psychiatrist
- if you are a healthcare or education professional working as part of a multidisciplinary team, such as (in the UK) an educational psychologist, occupational therapist, speech and language therapist or mental health nurse (please note that you would not be qualified to make a final diagnostic decision using the ADOS-2 or the ADI-R)
Delegates are required to have sufficient knowledge and experience of autism, working with autistic people, and conducting assessments.
There is no one path to becoming eligible to use ADOS-2 and ADI-R, though Hogrefe aims to follow current NICE and NHS guidelines at all times. We understand that some education and healthcare professionals whose remit does not include autism diagnosis or treatment might find it helpful to learn more about the assessments without the intent to use them. Unfortunately, our current training catalogue does not allow for ‘observer only’ certificates.
Please ensure that the relevant qualifications are provided upon booking. There is a box to enter your governing body membership number, or you can email certificates to our team at training@hogrefe.co.uk. If these are not provided, our team may ask for them.
The ADOS-2 is a clinical test and was not designed to be used in an educational context. Therefore, teachers are not able to use the ADOS-2 to diagnose, and as a result would not be able to receive a certificate of competence on completion of the training.
The ADI-R and ADOS-2 are both standardised on the DSM/ICD model, using a ‘pathology-based' model to diagnose what they refer to as 'Autism Spectrum Disorder’ thereby formulating ‘ASD’ as a neurodevelopmental ‘disorder.’
As a result, whilst the training courses themselves do inevitably focus on the DSM/ICD approach, we and our course tutors make every effort to incorporate various approaches to the identification of autism, not least those represented by autistic people themselves, with a focus on reflecting the sensitivities and preferences of the person being assessed, autistic or otherwise. There is also discussion in all of our courses about how the measures can be viewed and used from a number of perspectives, including the incorporation of a neuro-affirming approach.
FAQs: Before the training course
Introduction to ADOS-2 Course: Delegates will receive all course materials in a digital format ahead of the course and so will need access to a printer to print these off ahead of time. Access to the manual is not required for the course.
ADOS-2 & ADI-R Combination Course: Delegates will be provided with print copies of all coding modules for both tests via post ahead of the course. You will be asked for a delivery address upon booking. You don’t need access to either manual for the course.
ADI-R Administration & Coding Course: Delegates will be provided with print copies of both the Interview Booklet and the Algorithm Form. You will be asked for a delivery address upon booking. Access to the manual is not required for the course.
Introduction to ADOS-2 Course: Yes. Delegates will be required to view four pre-recorded lectures in advance of the course, which provide essential background information. This will enable delegates to spend more time on the active parts of the training such as discussions about ADOS coding and case discussions. Each lecture lasts approximately one hour.
ADOS-2 & ADI-R Combination Course: All delegates will be asked to create a profile on Moodle. There is then some reading to be completed before the course.
ADI-R Administration & Coding Course: No – but we recommend delegates become familiar with the assessment and the diagnostic process where possible.
FAQs: After the training course
Yes, we are happy to provide a certificate of attendance. Please email us to request this.
Introduction to ADOS-2 course: Yes, please see details on the course webpage.
ADOS-2 & ADI-R Combination Course: There is no post-course work to complete; coursework is completed throughout the five days of training, and you will be awarded a Certificate of Clinical Reliability when you successfully complete the five-day course.
ADI-R Administration & Coding Course: Yes, please see details on the course webpage.
The deadline is there to make sure that the work is completed while the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired on the course are still fresh. However, we do understand that life can sometimes get in the way, and if you think you need an extension, please contact your trainer and they will be able to assist or advise.
If reliability is not achieved, delegates will be asked to attend a follow-up reliability course at additional cost. We do not currently offer Reliability Training, however you can find a course run by one of our trainers or associates on this webpage.
Introduction to ADOS-2: Only upon completing the course and the post-course work will delegates be able to administer and assess using the ADOS-2. Please see qualification guidance above.
ADOS-2 & ADI-R Combination Course: Yes, completing the course means you are able to administer and assess using the ADOS-2 / ADI-R. Please see qualification guidance above.
ADI-R Administration & Coding Course: Only upon completing the course and the post-course work will delegates be able to administer and assess using the ADI-R. Please see qualification guidance above.
Please note that all ADOS-2 and ADI-R users are required to maintain a minimum of 80% reliability rates for both Clinical and Research use of the measures. Always ensure too that you understand the NICE guidance relating to autism assessment and diagnosis, and working as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Both assessments are available via our webshop. Don’t forget to claim your exclusive discount provided upon course completion (UK customers only).
